Are my mood swings a mental health issue?

Posted on: 2020-04-06 00:21:17]

Normally I am a very happy, optimistic person and I am in no way violent. But, my mood can change so drastically that I can become extremely depressed to a point where I will seriously consider, plan or even attempt suicide or I will become reckless and start doing things I have never done before, e.g. burning matches onto my skin, overdosing on pills to get high (even thought I’ve never done any drugs before). I also can become extremely angry, as if I suddenly become filled with rage, and when this happens I can become very verbally aggressive and say things to people I love that I would never think of saying outside of these episodes of anger, I have never been physically violent towards others but I can become violent towards myself and make reckless decisions. These episodes of sudden and very drastic changes in my mood/personality can last a few hours to a couple of days (usually the anger episodes are shorter and the depressive episodes are longer). Please note, I am a very happy person normally, I am NOT suicidal outside of these episodes (please don’t think I need to be admitted I always stop myself before it goes too far), and I am not a violent person naturally. This is why this is concerning for me, these mood swings have been on and off for a couple of years now. I do not have a history of mental health problems and neither do my family, so this is very strange. I would also like to note that I have a hormonal disorder (polycystic ovarian syndrome), and as I understand mood swings can be a symptom of this, so maybe that’s the cause?

I would not consider myself to be mentally ill usually, but with how drastic and sudden these changes in my personality are I would not be surprised to find out I have some sort of mental health issue.
